Gulda Cello Concerto now also available for symphony orchestra

We have the hr-Sinfonieorchester to thank: on its initiative, Friedrich Gulda’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra is now also available in a version for cello and symphony orchestra, arranged by Ingmar Sonnenmoser.

Under the baton of Vitali Alekseenok, the work was performed for the first time in its symphonic form. It preserves the original character of the concerto whilst opening up new sonic perspectives. Cellist Anastasia Kobekina took on the demanding solo part. With brilliance and stylistic flexibility, she guided the audience through the work’s astonishing stylistic mix of rock, jazz, classical and traditional wind music. The arrangement remains stylistically close to the original, yet transposes the chamber music-like gesture into a symphonic context. A central aim of the arrangement was to preserve maximum transparency in the unaltered solo part, thereby also enabling a performance without amplification.

The next performances with the hr-Sinfonieorchester are scheduled for 29 and 30 May 2026 at the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt am Main.
